PEACEFUL PLACE (2022)

Joy’s third album ‘Peaceful Place’ was released to critical acclaim in March 2022 with long-time collaborators Henrik Jensen on double bass and drummer Adam Osmianski.

Moving through the pandemic Joy felt there were no words she could sing to capture the grief and sense of loss that she and other people she knew had experienced. Therefore she decided to compose an album with no vocals at all performing on her first love, the piano. Her new material has a relaxed and minimalist vibe in keeping with the album’s title, ‘Peaceful Place’.

‘Evocative, completely immersive, and unapologetically beautiful.’ Mike Gates, UK Vibe ★★★★★

‘Stylish maturity of composition and playing.’ Tony Benjamin, Jazzwise ★★★★ (Editor’s Choice)

‘The best recording she’s made to date’. Peter Jones, All About Jazz ★★★★ 1/2

‘The sheer beauty of these songs and the meaning of the melodies stay with you long after they have finished playing, making this a real triumph out of adversity and one that is sure to stand the test of time.’ Juno Records

DWELL (2019)

Following the release of her debut album entitled 'Life On Land', Joy has spent the past year touring the UK performing her original music at various venues and festivals including Manchester, Cheltenham and London Jazz Festivals. Her sophomore release ‘Dwell’ weaves lyrical stories around intricate melodies and rhythms heavily influenced by jazz, Brazilian and groove music.

‘Fantastically wistful ambiance and beautiful voice.’ Kevin Le Gendre, BBC Radio 3

‘One of the very best jazz albums of the year’. Music Republic Magazine ★★★★★

'A great second release from an exquisitely talented performer and composer’. Frank Griffiths, London Jazz News

LIFE ON LAND (2017)

Joy’s debut album ‘Life On Land’ explores her passion for jazz and improvisation, her love of groove and dance music, her classical roots as a pianist and the soulful, poetic aspects of being a singer-songwriter.

‘Fiery improvisations from Ellis who provides well-structured hard-bop solos on piano and Fender Rhodes.’ John Lewis, The Guardian ★★★★

‘Startling debut from British singer-songwriter who sets her cool, poetic meditations…to a suitably restless, sophisticated jazz soundscape. Highly original work that creates a world of it’s own.’ Chris Ingham, MOJO ★★★★

‘Joy Ellis has a distinctive voice of her own. A very gifted player indeed. A triple threat with those pipes of hers, those fingers and her song-writing assets.’ Simon Redley, Music Republic Magazine ★★★★

‘Ellis’ presence on stage is easy, with a musical energy and intensity that is interspersed with comfortable chat and her trademark grin.’ Leah Williams, London Jazz News
